What Is Behind the ECO LABEL Environmental Label?

Today, all environmental labels are called eco labels and there are many labels and certification systems for environmental performance. Generally, all of these are known as environmental labels. Eco labels are accepted as a subgroup of environmental labels, and the testing and analysis of a product in terms of environmental conditions and the evaluation and labeling on the basis of its life cycle is called eco labeling.

Today, environmental labeling practices are classified in three different ways. Namely,

• The first type is defined in the ISO 14024 standard. This group is voluntary, multi-criteria and third-party organizations that certify products with environmental preferability within product groups that comply with life cycle principles. • The second type is defined in the ISO 14021 standard. This group is the programs that certify the environmental claims declared by the manufacturers and supplier companies and generally used in their promotions. This standard has been published by TSE in our country with the following title: TS EN ISO 14021 Environmental labels and declarations - Self-declaration of environmental claims (Type II environmental labels)
• The third type is defined in the ISO 14040 standard. This group is the programs approved by an impartial and independent authorized organization within the scope of quantitative criteria previously determined on the basis of life cycle. This standard has been published by TSE in our country with the following title: TS EN ISO 14040 Environmental management - Lifelong evaluation - Principles and framework.

The main approach behind the ECO LABEL environmental label is life cycle assessment. During this evaluation, the processes that will cause pollution in the production and usage stages of a product are focused on and their effects are calculated. The importance of life cycle evaluation is that it is a holistic evaluation and it takes the environmental performance of the product not only during use, but also in all processes including production, use and after-use.

ECO LABEL environmental label, criteria set by national and international organizations are recognized for products whose environmental effects are evaluated. The use of this label is completely voluntary. Products bearing this label are more likely to be noticed in the market.
